Pregnancy can be a time of excitement, yet it also brings tremendous change to our bodies and our lives. During pregnancy and postpartum, many women experience pain in the spine (often low back), pelvis, hips and rib cage. This is caused by elevated maternal hormones that increase elasticity of soft tissues in the body (ligaments, tendons, etc.) as well as weight gain, which leads to postural changes. 

Getting BACK to the basics: the spine is a complex chain of bones. discs, nerves and connective tissue.  It provides both mobility and stability, enabling us to use our arms and legs efficiently. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles become overstretched and can separate to accommodate the growing fetus.  This enhances the rounded shoulders and arch in the lower back. These changes can persist after delivery because of the new tasks of motherhood.
So what can you do to protect your back and address the pain? You can learn specialized exercises to re-strengthen the core and pelvic floor muscles, use proper posture and body mechanics while caring for your newborn and assume a regular fitness program with professional guidance. These recommendations will help you tackle the demands of motherhood with greater ease.
